Divisoria Smarts: 5 tips on How to Haggle Like a Pro

I read this very interesting and helpful article from Entrepreneur online.

Hahaha natawa naman ako. Parang yun yun gawain ko. So I'm sharing it to you here:

Divisoria Smarts: 5 tips on How to Haggle Like a Pro

By Carlo P. Mallo

Aug 25, 2011

Divisoria is not only a supplier’s haven, it is also a place to learn a lot about running a business and that includes negotiating for the goods you want at the price you want it, or at least close to it. For the ordinary person, it’s what is known as haggling.

Entrepreneur.com.ph asked Divisoria expert and Entrepreneur Philippines’ managing editor for the magazine Eileen Ang for five tips on how to haggle your way to cheap prices in Divisoria.

1. Start haggling for 50 percent off the price tag.
"Since they will not give it to you at the first price that you want, haggle for a very low price,” Eileen said. Usually, the deal ends at a 25 to 30 percent discount or halfway between the original price and the first bargain offer.

2. Don’t show interest for the product you are haggling for.
“Be ready to walk away if they do not give it at the price you want or refuses to bargain,” Eileen said. By feigning disinterest in the product, the store owner might give in to your price or work around it.

3. Scout around for cheaper prices.
“The first store does not have the cheapest prices, especially if it’s located by the entrance,” Eileen said. In most cases, the farther away the store is from the entrance, the cheaper the prices.

4. Use Chinese phrases.
It’s an urban legend but Eileen swears by it. By speaking a few phrases of the Chinese dialect,Fookien, you can actually work your way to cheaper prices. “Sometimes the store owners are more inclined to give discounts if you speak to them in Chinese,” Eileen said.

5. Don’t be obvious that it’s your first time.
“Show a little guile,” Eileen said. Unscrupulous store owners can take advantage if they sense that you are not used to the Divisoria-way and even give you higher prices.

Daydreaming --- Intelligence

Just recently I've been making it a habit to read articles in Psychology Today to update myself of the current finidings in the field. As you know I am a BS Psychology major. I don't do it just for the reason that I should but also because I want -- really.

I found an article saying that those who daydream a lot are found to be of superior intelligence. hahahah And at last although I'm not yet really covinced, there is a chance that I can be one of them.

I so love to daydream. I think it's one of my vice that keeps me sane from this chaotic world.

My nonscientific translation of this: while daydreaming, your thoughts are
gliding and ricocheting all over the place--past, present, future--accessing all
your stored knowledge, memories, experiences, etc. What the study seems to be
saying is that these connections--the ricocheting thoughts if you will--appear
to be stronger in smarter people. Maybe that's why they can get more out of
their daydreaming states of mind. They can dig deeper. This seems to fit nicely
with other studies that say that people who can go deeper into daydreaming
states are more likely to come away with worthwhile insights.

Many brilliant individuals--from Einstein to Mozart--credit their imagination as
the source of their creativity and genius. Einstein often compared his creative
process to that of poets and musicians, describing his insights as "a sudden
rapture." He famously said: "When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I
come close to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than
my talent for absorbing positive knowledge."

I think that might be the reason why although I don't study that much I could find myself familiarized with a lot of topics. I try to use them in my imagination unconsciously.

South Koreans told to go home and make babies --- Philippines on the other hand...

baby koreans, korea low birth rate, South Koreans told to go home and make babies, http://jill-des.blogspot.com/

According to a BBC News I've read, Koreans are now 'encouraged' to go home early & make more babies. This is being imposed by the Ministry of Health to counter the threatening low birth rate in the country by turning off the lights at 7 so that their employees will be forced to go home.

baby koreans, korea low birth rate, South Koreans told to go home and make babies, http://jill-des.blogspot.com/

They want to encourage staff to go home to their families and, well, make bigger
ones. They plan to repeat the experiment every month.

baby koreans, korea low birth rate, South Koreans told to go home and make babies, http://jill-des.blogspot.com/

This sounds a bit funny for some but it's a manifestation of how desperate the ministry is in doing their job to stimulate the birth rate. They also offer gift vouchers to officials who have more than one child & organize gatherings for a prospective matchmaking. They believe that the employees within the ministry shoul lead as a good example.

Looking at those baby pictures makes me wonder why most of them don't want to have little angels by their sides until I've read the core reason of the main problem. Koreans are blaming the burdensome education & child care cost.

I think the gov't should address those first before anything else.

(ang cute n pic na to! look at the center child's expression)

Which one speaks more of a parental love?

(batang lansangan)

Here in the Philippines some parents are not bothered about the childcare & education cost. It's not because we are a prosperous country but because some parents just don't seem to care. As long as they gratify their sexual needs. I don't loathe Filipino parents. I am just speaking in behalf of those young victims of unwanted pregnancies, broken families, street children & so on.

(wag nyo kong istorbohin.nananaginip ako)

Koreans would rather not have babies than see them suffer.

KOrea is encouraging their people to reproduce while our country does family planning.

It's funny how the world seems to lose the balance. Almost everything is in it's extreme.

Dear Universe I'm an NBSB at 21 -- Don't be shocked please..

Dear Universe,

I can't find any place or person where I can share fully what has been bothering me all my young adult life.

Here's a confession: I am 21 and an NBSB (no boyfriend since birth). Well don't be shocked. The least you can do is respond normally to that. Everybody made the same response when I tell them that. I'm not ugly, I'm not a lesbian, I have a several suitors but none of them appeal to me. Maybe because I'm 'pihikan' as how they call it. I am normal I guess until people keep giving the same shocked & seemingly disappointed gesture. I've liked few guys back in high school & college but really I can't fall in love. Or do I really know what love exactly is???? I've never been inlove all my life. I've been wonderin' why.

Well as a psychology major, I've been finding answers why. maybe this a some kind of disorder or maladjustment. I've found out so many reasons or rather excuses for this. And enumerating them would only fill this page up. They are just too many to mention.

What should I do??

Desperately yours,

Jill

10 Travel Taboos Around The Globe

I've just found this important info from MSN. I just copied & pasted it!
Photo credits From MSN also. The link is above!

1. Chopsticks:
There are many taboos to be wary of when eating with chopsticks. In Japan, it's considered a bad omen to insert your chopsticks into the rice bowl and leave them there for any reason. That's because resting chopsticks vertically in a rice bowl reminds the Japanese of grave markers. It's also considered poor manners to take food from the serving plate with the ends of the chopsticks you've eaten from. Instead, turn your chopsticks with that side toward you, and then pick the food up. In China, among other countries, pointing a chopstick at someone is considered rude.

2. Visiting mosques

All visitors — Muslim and non-Muslim — must remove their shoes before stepping into a mosque. Visitors should also follow customs for dress when visiting a mosque. Men should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Women should cover any bare skin, although the strictness of this guideline varies from country to country. Women must wear a head scarf; however, if you don't have one, most large mosques will have head scarves that you can borrow at the entrance.

3. Giving flowers

If you plan to give flowers as a gift in Ukraine, be sure the bouquet contains an odd number of blossoms, as even-numbered bunches are customary for funerals. If you're bringing flowers as a hostess gift or to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion, you should avoid yellow flowers or Easter lilies, which are also reserved for funerals. When invited to a Ukrainian's home for a meal, you may want to play it safe by bringing a bottle of imported liquor instead.

4. Kissing

Train passengers in Cheshire, England, can run afoul of local authorities if they linger over long, romantic farewells. Officials at Warrington Railway Station posted a "No Kissing" sign to stop smooching couples from holding up other commuters. However, if you need to say a longer goodbye, you still can … in the newly designated "Kissing Zone."

5. Salt

Although Egyptians are considered to be extremely friendly and hospitable, their cooks must have very tender egos. When traveling to Egypt, don't put salt on your food, as doing so is considered an insult to the chef. Fortunately, Egyptian food is usually quite flavorful, thanks to abundantly available spices and the use of garlic, onions and other aromatics.

6. Visiting churches

If you're planning a trip to Italy in the warmer months, be sure to pack more than shorts and tank tops. Visitors to the country's churches and cathedrals are expected to dress modestly, which excludes short shorts or sleeveless tops for both men and women. Expect your dress to be scrutinized at the door by guards or other parishioners; to avoid being called out, pack a shawl, sweatshirt or other layer you can slip on before entering the church.

7. "V for victory" sign
Don't make the "V for victory" sign with your palm facing inward in Great Britain, as it's considered to be both a gesture of defiance and an insult. According to popular legend, the two-fingered salute derives from the gestures of longbowmen fighting for the English army during the Hundred Years' War. As the story goes, the French claimed that they would cut off the arrow-shooting fingers of all longbowmen after they had won a decisive battle. But the English came out victorious and showed off their two fingers, still intact.

8. Insulting the king of Thailand

Thais deeply revere their 80-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej — some see him as almost divine and carry his image on talismans to bring good luck — and insulting him is a crime known as lese majeste, punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years. The law, a throwback to the era of absolute sovereign power, has led to Web sites being censored and at least one foreign writer having been arrested.

9. Clinking beer glasses

Hungarians don't clink beer glasses or bottles when they're making a toast, due to the tradition of remembering soldiers killed in the 1848 revolution against the Habsburg Empire. Legend has it that after Austrians celebrated the executions of 13 Hungarian martyrs by clinking their beer glasses, it was decreed that no Hungarian would toast with beer for 150 years. Even though it's now more than a decade after the end of that time period, old habits die hard. For travelers, this taboo may be easier to remember than how to say cheers in Hungarian: "Egészségedre."

10. Cleaning your plate

The "clean plate club" doesn't exist in Cambodia. If you eat everything on your plate, it means you still want more and signifies that your hosts have not served you enough. Cambodians enjoy a strong sour taste in many of their dishes, especially through the addition of prahok, a pungent fish paste. This is an acquired taste for most foreigners, so maybe cleaning your plate isn't a big risk after all.

Brittany Murphy Died at 32

I was really shocked upon reading the news from yahoo. She is one of those hollywood actresses I find sincere, cute, funny & good. My condolences to her bereaved family. T.T

LOS ANGELES - Brittany Murphy, the actress who got her start in
the sleeper hit "Clueless" and rose to stardom in "8 Mile" before her movie
roles declined in recent years, died Sunday in Los Angeles of what appeared to
be natural causes, a Los Angeles County coroner's official said. She was 32.

Murphy was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,
hospital spokeswoman Sally Stewart said.

Murphy was transported to the
hospital after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. at
the home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, in the
Hollywood Hills.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Murphy
apparently collapsed in the bathroom, and authorities were looking into her
medical history.

An official cause of death may not be determined for
some time, since toxicology tests will be required, but "it appears to be
natural," Winter said. He said an autopsy was planned for Monday or Tuesday.

Winter said Murphy's family was cooperating with the coroner's
investigation. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, he said.

Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into Murphy's death,
Officer Norma Eisenman said. Detectives and coroner's officials were at Murphy
and Monjack's home Sunday afternoon but did not talk to reporters. Paparazzi
were camped outside the multistory home, located above the Sunset Strip.

Messages left for Murphy's manager and agent by The Associated Press
were not immediately returned.

Neighbor Clare Staples said she saw
firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy
was on a stretcher and "looked as though she was dead at the scene."

Murphy's husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared "dazed"
as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said. "It's just tragic," she added.

TMZ.com first reported Murphy's death Sunday morning.

Murphy's
father, Angelo Bertolotti, said he learned of her death from his son, the
actress's brother, and was stunned.

"She was just an absolute doll since
she was born," Bertolotti said from his Branford, Fla., home. "Her personality
was always outward. Everybody loved her — people that made movies with her,
people on a cruise — they all loved her. She was just a regular gal."

He
said he hadn't heard much about the circumstances of Murphy's death. Bertolotti
divorced her mother when Murphy was young and hadn't seen Murphy in the past few
years. He said he used to be in the mob and served prison time on federal drug
charges.

"She was just talented," Bertolotti said. "And I loved her very
much."

Meanwhile, Murphy's publicist, Nicole Perna, said in a statement:
"In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is
their wish that you respect their privacy."

Born Nov. 10, 1977, in
Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los
Angeles to pursue acting.

Her career started in the early 1990s with
small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for
parts in "Girl, Interrupted," "Clueless" and "8 Mile."

Her on-screen
work had lessened of late, but Murphy's voice gave life to numerous animated
characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox's "King of
the Hill" and Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature "Happy Feet."

She
is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming film, "The Expendables," set
for release next year.

Her role in "8 Mile" led to more recognition,
Murphy told AP in 2003. "That changed a lot," she said. "That was the difference
between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not."

Murphy
credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success.

"When I
asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for
me," Murphy said. "I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that
was conducive to creating and didn't stifle any of that. She always believed in
me."

She dated Ashton Kutcher, who costarred with Murphy in 2003's
romantic comedy "Just Married."

Kutcher sent a message on Twitter Sunday
morning about Murphy's death: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine,"
Kutcher wrote. "My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband,
& her amazing mother Sharon."

Emma Watson Named Highest-Grossing Actress of The Decade

OMG!!!!! As In OMG!!I really can't believe this. She surpassed those veteran actresses?? That's really awesome of her. I thgink it's also because she only spends little of her money. I so envy her!!

I was really surprised when I read this new in OMG!!

Sorry Julia, Reese and Sandra. The actress who really ruled the past decade was
... Emma Watson.

The Guinness Book of World Records has named Watson,
19, as the biggest-grossing female star of the 00s; her film work in the past
decade has grossed $5.4 billion in global box office receipts.

Remember
Emma Watson's "wardrobe malfunction"?

Cinching the young British
actress's top spot was her co-starring role as Hermione Granger in the six Harry
Potter films released so far. Fun fact: Watson's overall work actually earned
even more in ticket sales than her male Harry Potter chums Daniel Radcliffe and
Rupert Grint. (Watson lent her voice to the 2008 animated hit The Tale of the
Despereaux.)

Which stars totally lost it in 2009?

Who's the
second top-earning actress of the decade? Not Julia Roberts or Reese Witherspoon
or Sandra Bullock: it's Dame Maggie Smith, the revered British actress and
fellow Harry Potter star (Hogwarts teacher Minerva McGonagall).

What
about the men? Guinness names Samuel L. Jackson of Star Wars and other films,
but Entertainment Weekly begs to differ, crowning Orlando Bloom, who commanded
$6.5 billion in ticket sales in mega-franchises the Pirates of the Caribbean and
The Lord of the Rings.

Look back on the year's worst-dressed stars!

Currently an Ivy League student at Brown University in Rhode Island,
Watson will next appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 in
2010 and 2011.
