10 Travel Taboos Around The Globe

I've just found this important info from MSN. I just copied & pasted it!
Photo credits From MSN also. The link is above!

1. Chopsticks:
There are many taboos to be wary of when eating with chopsticks. In Japan, it's considered a bad omen to insert your chopsticks into the rice bowl and leave them there for any reason. That's because resting chopsticks vertically in a rice bowl reminds the Japanese of grave markers. It's also considered poor manners to take food from the serving plate with the ends of the chopsticks you've eaten from. Instead, turn your chopsticks with that side toward you, and then pick the food up. In China, among other countries, pointing a chopstick at someone is considered rude.

2. Visiting mosques

All visitors — Muslim and non-Muslim — must remove their shoes before stepping into a mosque. Visitors should also follow customs for dress when visiting a mosque. Men should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Women should cover any bare skin, although the strictness of this guideline varies from country to country. Women must wear a head scarf; however, if you don't have one, most large mosques will have head scarves that you can borrow at the entrance.

3. Giving flowers

If you plan to give flowers as a gift in Ukraine, be sure the bouquet contains an odd number of blossoms, as even-numbered bunches are customary for funerals. If you're bringing flowers as a hostess gift or to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion, you should avoid yellow flowers or Easter lilies, which are also reserved for funerals. When invited to a Ukrainian's home for a meal, you may want to play it safe by bringing a bottle of imported liquor instead.

4. Kissing

Train passengers in Cheshire, England, can run afoul of local authorities if they linger over long, romantic farewells. Officials at Warrington Railway Station posted a "No Kissing" sign to stop smooching couples from holding up other commuters. However, if you need to say a longer goodbye, you still can … in the newly designated "Kissing Zone."

5. Salt

Although Egyptians are considered to be extremely friendly and hospitable, their cooks must have very tender egos. When traveling to Egypt, don't put salt on your food, as doing so is considered an insult to the chef. Fortunately, Egyptian food is usually quite flavorful, thanks to abundantly available spices and the use of garlic, onions and other aromatics.

6. Visiting churches

If you're planning a trip to Italy in the warmer months, be sure to pack more than shorts and tank tops. Visitors to the country's churches and cathedrals are expected to dress modestly, which excludes short shorts or sleeveless tops for both men and women. Expect your dress to be scrutinized at the door by guards or other parishioners; to avoid being called out, pack a shawl, sweatshirt or other layer you can slip on before entering the church.

7. "V for victory" sign
Don't make the "V for victory" sign with your palm facing inward in Great Britain, as it's considered to be both a gesture of defiance and an insult. According to popular legend, the two-fingered salute derives from the gestures of longbowmen fighting for the English army during the Hundred Years' War. As the story goes, the French claimed that they would cut off the arrow-shooting fingers of all longbowmen after they had won a decisive battle. But the English came out victorious and showed off their two fingers, still intact.

8. Insulting the king of Thailand

Thais deeply revere their 80-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej — some see him as almost divine and carry his image on talismans to bring good luck — and insulting him is a crime known as lese majeste, punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years. The law, a throwback to the era of absolute sovereign power, has led to Web sites being censored and at least one foreign writer having been arrested.

9. Clinking beer glasses

Hungarians don't clink beer glasses or bottles when they're making a toast, due to the tradition of remembering soldiers killed in the 1848 revolution against the Habsburg Empire. Legend has it that after Austrians celebrated the executions of 13 Hungarian martyrs by clinking their beer glasses, it was decreed that no Hungarian would toast with beer for 150 years. Even though it's now more than a decade after the end of that time period, old habits die hard. For travelers, this taboo may be easier to remember than how to say cheers in Hungarian: "Egészségedre."

10. Cleaning your plate

The "clean plate club" doesn't exist in Cambodia. If you eat everything on your plate, it means you still want more and signifies that your hosts have not served you enough. Cambodians enjoy a strong sour taste in many of their dishes, especially through the addition of prahok, a pungent fish paste. This is an acquired taste for most foreigners, so maybe cleaning your plate isn't a big risk after all.

Voter's Registration Extended to January 9, 2010

Here's an article from the Supreme Court site: Click here for the original link.

SC Extends Voters Registration until January 9, 2010

Posted:
Decemberr 15, 2009
By Jay B. Rempillo

Voters for the May 10,
2010 elections can register until January 9, 2010.

Finding the petition
impressed with merit, the Supreme Court, by a unanimous vote, today granted the
petition to extend the voters registration and declared null and void the
Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Resolution No. 8585 insofar as it set the
deadline of voter registration for the 2010 polls on October 31, 2009.

In a nine-page decision penned by Justice Conchita Carpio Morales, the
Court also directed the COMELEC to proceed with dispatch in reopening the
registration of voters and holding the same until January 9, 2010. It said its
decision is immediately executory.

The Court said that it did not find
any ground to hold that the mandate of continuing voter registration cannot be
reasonably held within the period provided by RA 8189, The Voter’s Registration
Act of 1996. It stressed that RA 6646 (The Electoral Reforms Law of 1987) and RA
8436 (An Act Authorizing the COMELEC to Use an Automated Election System in the
May 11, 1998 National or Local Elections and in Subsequent National and Local
Electoral Exercises, Providing Funds Therefor and for Other Purposes) grant the
poll body the power to fix other periods and dates for pre-election activities
“only if the same cannot be reasonably held within the period provided by law.”
There is thus no occasion for the COMELEC to exercise its power to fix other
dates or deadlines therefor, it added.

Citing sec. 8 of RA 8189, the
Court held that Congress itself has determined that the period of 120 days
before a regular election and 90 days before a special election is enough time
for the COMELEC to make all the necessary preparations with respect to the
coming elections. The preparations include (1) completion of project precincts,
(2) constitution of the Board of Election Inspectors, (3) finalizing the
Computerized Voters List, (4) supervision of the campaign period, and (5)
preparation, bidding, printing, and distribution of Voter’s Information Sheet.
The Court said that such determination of Congress is well within the ambit of
its legislative power, which the High Court is bound to respect, and that the
COMELEC’s rule-making power should be exercised in accordance with the
prevailing law.

“The clear text of the law thus decrees that voters be
allowed to register daily during regular offices hours, except during the period
starting 120 days before a regular election and 90 days before a special
election,” said the Court.

The petition before the High Court was filed
by Raymond V. Palatino, a youth sectoral representative under the Kabataan
Party-list, and other concerned citizens. (GR No. 189868, Palatino v. COMELEC,

Plagiarism Invading KPOP idols! (Paligiarism or Parody?)

A lot of copycats have now surfaced & the victims are 2 of my favorite Korean Pop idols Big Bang & 2NE1. It was flattering for other Souteastern asian countries to appreciate them but somehow in someway it affects my idols negatively.

Here are some articles from Korea Times reporting the said
case:

Above: Big Bang

Above: OkBang

A copycat of Big Bang, one of South Korea's top music
groups, has appeared in China, following one of Girls' Generation.

QQ.com, China's portal site, said members of OkBang, which has
reportedly been modeled after Big Bang, have been practicing hard before their
official debut.

A South Korean entertainment company has reportedly been
involved in the creation of OkBang over the past few months in an effort to
spark a hip-hop craze in the world's most populous country. OkBang consists of
five members, like Big Bang, and has many similarities to Big Bang in terms of
musical style, wardrobe and hairstyles.

Many South Korean netizens have
criticized the planned debut of the band, saying the OkBang members still look
crude.

The China’s version of Korean idol group, Girls’ Generation, has been the
talk of the town on the Internet these days as the nine-member group named Idol
Girls has appeared with a photo on a famous domestic portal site.

The
photo with “Chinese Version of Girls’ Generation” shows that they reenact the
concept of ‘marine girls’ when the Korean girl group was performing with their
song, Tell Me Your Wish.

Chinese media also reported that the
choreography shown in the music video “Chinese Girl” in which Chinese singer
“Yendangdang” sang in folk style is very similar with that by “Gee,” a member of
“Girls’ Generation.” As a result, they are called as the imitation of Korea’s
Girls Generation among Chinese netizens, the media reported.

Meanwhile,
Korean netizens, who have seen and heard the Idol Girls and the music video,
said that it is too similar with those of Girls’ Generation. Other netizens said
that it is the “parody” of the Korean idol group rather than “plagiarism.”

2NE1 got also a copycat in Thailand; The girl band's name is Candy mafia

A copycat of South Korea's top girl group 2NE1 has shown up in Thailand, following the emergence of China's version of Girls' Generation.

The ``Candy Mafia'' music video by Thailand's four-member female group Mafia has many similarities to 2NE1's music video ``Fire,'' press reports said. In particular, the Thai members copied costumes and styles of their counterparts from 2NE1 to a large extent.

An Internet user was quoted as saying, ``We can easily find that the motor bike scene in `Fire' was stolen by the Thai group. Nonetheless, 2NE1 is superior to Mafia in many respects.''

Last week, a copycat of South Korean idol group Girls' Generation became the talk of the Internet after a photo of the nine-member Chinese girl group named Idol Girls appeared on a famed domestic portal site.

Brittany Murphy Died at 32

I was really shocked upon reading the news from yahoo. She is one of those hollywood actresses I find sincere, cute, funny & good. My condolences to her bereaved family. T.T

LOS ANGELES - Brittany Murphy, the actress who got her start in
the sleeper hit "Clueless" and rose to stardom in "8 Mile" before her movie
roles declined in recent years, died Sunday in Los Angeles of what appeared to
be natural causes, a Los Angeles County coroner's official said. She was 32.

Murphy was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,
hospital spokeswoman Sally Stewart said.

Murphy was transported to the
hospital after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. at
the home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, in the
Hollywood Hills.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Murphy
apparently collapsed in the bathroom, and authorities were looking into her
medical history.

An official cause of death may not be determined for
some time, since toxicology tests will be required, but "it appears to be
natural," Winter said. He said an autopsy was planned for Monday or Tuesday.

Winter said Murphy's family was cooperating with the coroner's
investigation. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, he said.

Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into Murphy's death,
Officer Norma Eisenman said. Detectives and coroner's officials were at Murphy
and Monjack's home Sunday afternoon but did not talk to reporters. Paparazzi
were camped outside the multistory home, located above the Sunset Strip.

Messages left for Murphy's manager and agent by The Associated Press
were not immediately returned.

Neighbor Clare Staples said she saw
firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy
was on a stretcher and "looked as though she was dead at the scene."

Murphy's husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared "dazed"
as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said. "It's just tragic," she added.

TMZ.com first reported Murphy's death Sunday morning.

Murphy's
father, Angelo Bertolotti, said he learned of her death from his son, the
actress's brother, and was stunned.

"She was just an absolute doll since
she was born," Bertolotti said from his Branford, Fla., home. "Her personality
was always outward. Everybody loved her — people that made movies with her,
people on a cruise — they all loved her. She was just a regular gal."

He
said he hadn't heard much about the circumstances of Murphy's death. Bertolotti
divorced her mother when Murphy was young and hadn't seen Murphy in the past few
years. He said he used to be in the mob and served prison time on federal drug
charges.

"She was just talented," Bertolotti said. "And I loved her very
much."

Meanwhile, Murphy's publicist, Nicole Perna, said in a statement:
"In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is
their wish that you respect their privacy."

Born Nov. 10, 1977, in
Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los
Angeles to pursue acting.

Her career started in the early 1990s with
small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for
parts in "Girl, Interrupted," "Clueless" and "8 Mile."

Her on-screen
work had lessened of late, but Murphy's voice gave life to numerous animated
characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox's "King of
the Hill" and Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature "Happy Feet."

She
is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming film, "The Expendables," set
for release next year.

Her role in "8 Mile" led to more recognition,
Murphy told AP in 2003. "That changed a lot," she said. "That was the difference
between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not."

Murphy
credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success.

"When I
asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for
me," Murphy said. "I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that
was conducive to creating and didn't stifle any of that. She always believed in
me."

She dated Ashton Kutcher, who costarred with Murphy in 2003's
romantic comedy "Just Married."

Kutcher sent a message on Twitter Sunday
morning about Murphy's death: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine,"
Kutcher wrote. "My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband,
& her amazing mother Sharon."

Are Managers Exempted to Falling Hair???

I ate at Mcdo just a while ago....and just as expected I've roamed my eyes to what was around me and tried to observe whatever catches my eyes. Then I noticed something really obvious & it surely provoked my curiousity.

Managers and powers-that be in all fastfoods & the restaurant I'd worked for before were not using any hairnet unlike the crews. I've pondered this for quite a while then asked "Are Managers Exempted to Falling Hair???" to no one but myself. As we all know, hairnets are used to avoid hair falling on or coming in contact with the food. (It is the dirtiest part of the body).
Most of them do the task of serving food being the cashier just like everybody else. So it's highly possible that they mix the foods with their hairs.
So why not just comply to the rules they themselves impose? Is it their privilege not to? or a privilege to look good though they know that it may risk the quality of food they are serving? I just really can't understand the world sometimes. Those are making the law/rules are the ones allowed to violate them. Is idealism already extinxt in our modern day? No wonder the product of generations that are gradually sprouting are "rejects" ( factory/industry terms). Can you balem them?

A Message for My Other Self

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to ALL!!

I am happy because it's Christmas. because I have money to celebrate it.and that just made me realize that I have altrered the real meaning of Christmas

Isn't Christmas for everybody??? not just for those who have money but also for those who still believe in Christ the savior

Back in the province, as a young lass, when I didn't have money or when we didn't have "handa" on our table I believed it wasn't Christmas. Is that also how other's feel?? It is so sad to think. I hope we can all feel & justify it's real meaning. Let's try to give as much as we can to "lesser-haves" & make them feel it's for everybody! A simple smile, a simple thank you to driver, a simple but sincere regard for someone will do. But it would change much if we could really give. Let's try not to be skeptical. Let's take a glimpse of the world from their very own eyes. Let's have emphaty. That will chage everything!!

12.18.2009 - The National Christmas Party???

Taking my daily trip from the streets of Camarin Caloocan City to the busy & elegant roads of Ortigas, I've been seeing students from different levels carry gifts & foods & wear new clothes for their Christmas party. I've thought for a while & tried to remind myself if GMA again declared Dec 18 as the Christmas party day for all the schools. hahah but then di pala...nagkataon lang!

It's nice to see their eager faces full of anticipation though. Some have even worn gown-like dresses, some were punkistas, some were kikays some were just plain. Like I used to be!

As I was doing my "observation" in the fx taxi I felt sad for not having a camera. I could have taken a shot to post here. But I lost mine when I was held up on my way home last September. So I just borrowed one pic from the net to make this more interesting to read.

Emma Watson Named Highest-Grossing Actress of The Decade

OMG!!!!! As In OMG!!I really can't believe this. She surpassed those veteran actresses?? That's really awesome of her. I thgink it's also because she only spends little of her money. I so envy her!!

I was really surprised when I read this new in OMG!!

Sorry Julia, Reese and Sandra. The actress who really ruled the past decade was
... Emma Watson.

The Guinness Book of World Records has named Watson,
19, as the biggest-grossing female star of the 00s; her film work in the past
decade has grossed $5.4 billion in global box office receipts.

Remember
Emma Watson's "wardrobe malfunction"?

Cinching the young British
actress's top spot was her co-starring role as Hermione Granger in the six Harry
Potter films released so far. Fun fact: Watson's overall work actually earned
even more in ticket sales than her male Harry Potter chums Daniel Radcliffe and
Rupert Grint. (Watson lent her voice to the 2008 animated hit The Tale of the
Despereaux.)

Which stars totally lost it in 2009?

Who's the
second top-earning actress of the decade? Not Julia Roberts or Reese Witherspoon
or Sandra Bullock: it's Dame Maggie Smith, the revered British actress and
fellow Harry Potter star (Hogwarts teacher Minerva McGonagall).

What
about the men? Guinness names Samuel L. Jackson of Star Wars and other films,
but Entertainment Weekly begs to differ, crowning Orlando Bloom, who commanded
$6.5 billion in ticket sales in mega-franchises the Pirates of the Caribbean and
The Lord of the Rings.

Look back on the year's worst-dressed stars!

Currently an Ivy League student at Brown University in Rhode Island,
Watson will next appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 in
2010 and 2011.

How to Make a Screenshot

This is an example of a

SCREENSHOT

screenshot

Screenshot - is a snapshot of what's on your computer's screen.

I have used to wonder how this was made. I thought a camera was necesary but it wasn't.

Here's my new discovery adding to my "How To"

To create a screenshot follow these steps:

1.The first step is to create the windows that you want to capture and leave them up on the screen.
2.Just to the right of your keyboard, you should see three groups of keys. The lower set of keys usually is a group of arrow keys. Above that is usually a set of some six keys that are labeled "Insert," "Home," "Page Up," etc. Above that should be three keys that have rather odd labels - like Pause/Break and ScrLk. One of those keys should be labeled PrtScrn/SysRq. Pressing Alt-PrintScreen (Alt-PrtScrn) places an image of the frontmost window on the clipboard. Pressing PrintScreen by itself places an image of the entire desktop on the clipboard.
3.If you press PrtScrn/SysRq, nothing will appear to have happened. However, your computer just took a snapshot of its screen and stored that picture on its clipboard, much as it stores information that you cut and paste.
4.Open MS-Paint. (From Start/Run, issue the command "mspaint".) Create a new empty image, and use Edit/Paste to bring in the screenshot you just took. (If the screenshot is smaller than the default Paint canvas, you will end up with white areas. Start over: create a new empty image, change its dimensions to 1x1, and Paste again. The canvas will grow for the Paste, but it doesn't shrink.)
5.Use MS-Paint to Save As, using PNG as the file format (it is superior to all the rest).
Other Notes
•On Vista (all editions) you can use Snipping Tool to capture a screen shot, or snip, of any object on your screen, and then annotate, save, or share the image. It is a screengrab application that is much better then Windows XP's measly Alt-PrintScreen. But the tool is difficult to find. But you can just type "Snipping Tool" in the search bar in the windows menu. The first time you run it it will ask if you want to add it to your quick launch bar.
•Instead of MS Paint you could also use Word, or some other word processing program, you can paste the image into it. You can then save the Word document and email it to us as an attachment.
•You may also be able to paste the image directly into your email, depending on what type of email program you have. (Microsoft Outlook can do this, for example.)
•If you press Alt and the PrtScrn/SysRq keys together, the computer will take a snapshot of the currently active window ONLY. This can save some space in a Word documentor in an email.
This works on all versions of Windows: Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT and Win2000, XP, 2003.

To make it simpler:

1. Press ALT + Prt Scr

2. Open your MS Paint. - click start on thelower left part of your PC then click PAINT

3. On PAINT's toolbar Click EDIT>PASTE

4. Edit the now picture & save in you hard drive.

Tips for Phone English Teachers (to Koreans)

http://jill-des.blogspot.com/, Phone English Teachers, working student, Caloocan City, The Journey

hahha...I'm not really sure if I'm in the right place to give tips & strategies...(not confident again??) but I'd just like to share what I know so far. I've been trying to google trying to know some tips & it was futile. No such articles are available in the world wide web. I hope the following might help:

1. To kids or juniors usually about 12-14 years old - try to injest some humor. You should be not too serious in class like a job interviewer. Laughing from time to time isn't bad right??

2. Having a lively voice also helps s lot. When the teacher sounds bored & sleepy the tendency is for the student to feel the same.

3. Having games sometimes could also encourage the student to participate in class.

4. There's a 70/30 rule - which means that the student should be talking 70% of the entire conversation while the teacher is only 30%. This means giving them enough time to react & think about what they are saying thoroughly.

*Sometimes this is not strictly followed in cases like when the student is too beginner & only says YES & NO. Giving them the alloted time means like not talking the entire class so beware.

5. Relating the technical topics to the student's present situation.

For example: The topic is about FUTURE TENSE. You can ask the student to tell you about his/her plans in the nearest future. By this he/she should use future time expressions & "going to" & "will"

6. Knowing the student's tickling spot can also ensure interactive class. When the student is really interested in KPOP atists songs & fashion it wouldn't hurt if you do some reaserch & sound as if you you've been a fan the whole time. Yeah...sometimes we have to be actors & actresses too..(not necessarily liars)

7. Keeping yourself aware of what's happening in Korea is also a plus. When you are having a conversation about it, it would sound like you just live in their neighborhood.

8. The more common things you share the more enjoyable class will be.

9. Giving homework gives them a preview of what will be tomorrow's class be like. They can be able to anticipate & prepare.

10. When the book is too easy you can insert something that might puzzle the student to study even harder.

11. Whe the student seems really good & rarely commits mistakes (there are cases that the teacher has to make corrections before the end of the class - ) tell him so but you can also say that he/mentioned expressed some sentences that can be expressed in a better & more effective ways. They are usually grammatically correct & you have to explain this as well.
For example:
Student: I stayed at home when the rain is falling down.
Better: I stayed at home when it was raining/

Koreans Marrying Foreigners More Often.

*This whole post is just copied from an American living in KOrea's blog.

The article "More Koreans seek foreign spouse for 2nd marriage" was in the Korea Herald last week, citing statistics that show marriages between Koreans and foreigners are becoming more common, especially among those Koreans marrying for the first time.
More Koreans opted for foreign spouses when marrying for the second time, the national statistical office said yesterday.

According to Statistics Korea, the number of Korean men who married foreign women stood at 28,163 last year, more than quadruple the number nine years ago. Of them, 9,930, or 35 percent, were remarried, up from 24.6 percent back in 2000.

The percentage of Korean women remarrying foreign husbands also increased from 36.4 percent in 2000 to 41.5 percent last year. In 2008, a total of 8,041 Korean women married foreign men, up 72.6 percent over the cited period.

The article goes on to say the number of Korean men married to foreign women is seven times the number of Korean women married to foreign men.

On Twitter a couple days ago I wrote
Great. Leftovers.

Which in hindsight was kind of mean. But, I wasn't thinking about the change in attitudes toward divorce---which in September was 58% higher than last September---or to greater tolerance of foreign men with Korean women, but I was instead reminded that many of these "international" marriages are unhappy. The Herald article continues:
"Korean men preferred women from China or other Southeast Asian countries after their failed first marriage, while Korean women chose men from developed countries such as Japan and the United States," said an official at the agency.

Say what you want about a "failed" marriage, but I'm reminded that mail-order marriages are increasingly popular in rural areas among men who are otherwise unmarriable: men living in sparsely populated areas, men in undesirable industries, older men, men with physical disabilities or mental handicaps. It would be interesting to look at why Korean men are turning to foreign women from China and Southeast Asia. Is it because they're, for a number of reasons, easier?

In April we read that divorce rates around the country are decreasing, in part because of
a mandatory system under which couples are required to take a one- to three-month cooling off period.

(what?), but divorces among Koreans and foreigners are up. The Hankyoreh writes:
Experts are interpreting the rapid rise in divorces among international couples as having a direct correlation with the large increase since the 1980s in rural South Korean men’s rate of international marriage. The number of marriages between South Korean men and foreign women, which was 6,945 in 2000, roughly quadrupled to 28,163 marriages last year. During the same period, South Korean women’s rate of international marriage nearly doubled as well, increasing from 4,660 marriages to 8,041.

An article from 2008 says that the divorce rate among interracial marriages is 41%, and says that four out of five couples were married less than four years.

I'm reminded of numbers that say 46% of foreign women in Jeollanam-do want to divorce their Korean husbands, or that 80% of foreign women surveyed in 2005 said they wouldn't marry a Korean again:
A survey by the Corea Image Communication Institute released yesterday has some interesting observations on cross-cultural communications and romance. Perhaps the most eye-opening was that eight out of 10 foreign women with Korean spouses said that they would not marry a Korean again, while over half the foreign men said they would go looking for another Korean woman to marry.

Heroes of the Modern UCC - The working Students

Credits: Sorry I randomly searched the pics above from google images.

Lurking around UCC, observing students, eavesdropping & roaming the streets & mall have awakened my mind about my fellow UCCians dillema. They or should I say WE are all crying for our expenses.

Majority of us is poor. We pay a maximum of 3,000 pesos & a minimum of 800 pesos tution fee yet we still cry for help. Fortunately , we have learned not only to ask for tissue paper to wipe our tears but also to wipe it & worked it out. We are the working students, who I think is becoming a major hero of our own lives. We learned that nothing can take us out of the situation unless we do something about it & we do it vigorously. The heroes I'm talking about are found in SM supermarket, hypermarket, Jollibbee, McDonalds, call centers & on the streets late at night or nearly dawn struggling to survive, & brave the way to classrooms with so little sleep. Sometimes we pride ourselves as those experienced in jobs even before graduation but on the other side we are "missers". We miss a lot of school activities which are supposedly harnessing our talents & gifts. We miss the bonding times with our friends & classmates. We miss some lessons due to absences & tardiness. We miss a lot. But we are still thnakful that we are given the chance to change the path to take in the future.

Can't Paste files to Blogger???

I had this problem just a while ago.

Problem: I couldn't paste any file from a site to this very space I'm typing now. It was quite long so didn't dare to retype them so I searched the net & found this answer:

Solution: Try hitting the EDIT HTML first before pasting it. It worked for me.

This problem usually occurs when you see the the box that contains the title of your blog post tends to overlap the box for the body of your message -- sort of like a warning sign that you won't be able to paste.
Through constant research I've found out that this sort of problem happenst to Internet Explorer users. Before I encountered the sais problem I have updated my IE to IE 8 so I guess there's a connection there. Some said in some forums that they don't encounter such problem in Firefox!

Source: I found this helful advice from this forum from dwillright! Thank you so much whoever you are!

The Booming Industry of Phone English Teaching

http://jill-des.blogspot.com/, Phone English Teaching in the Philippines,Online Teachers

working student, Caloocan City, university of Caloocan City

A lot of Filipino English speakers nowadays shift to the blosssoming industry of teaching English to Foreigners mostly to Koreans. It has been gaining the spotlight since 2004. This is due to the fact that callecenter jobs in teletech, Convergys, telus & etc. are really stressful & health-risky. Although the pay is a bit lower when compared. Another reason is that Korea is starting to go global. Most of the employers there require high scores in English Tests like TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS and many more. They have the option of going to native english speakers like the US, Australia & Canada but in times of economic crisis they resort to going here.

Reasons why:

1. Proximity - Philippines is just roughly 45 minutes travel by plane from South Korea.

2. Inexpensive - the cost is really more affordable compared to the other countries.

3. The cost of living is cheap - there are a lot of dormitory-english schools here. Koreans live in these dorms & at the same time learn English for 1-5 months. The one-night expense at the bar in Korea surges up to 5 thousand pesos while it's only 500-1,000 pesos here.

4. The quality is almost the same - it depends on how wise you are in choosing the institution to go to.

There are different services in this field.

1. The online teaching (which i'm doing now) - the teacher calls the Korean student (who's of course in Korea) & have a class which lasts from 10 minutes to 1 hour. Here in our company it's 10 - 30 minutes. Click Here to learn more about Phone English Teaching. Phone English

Phone English is an old serviced that has existed for quite a long time. Yet it
wasn't until quite recently that it became the preferred choice for ordinary
households as a method of children's English language education.

A
mediating agency arranges native English teachers with students, and the latter
call students at a designated time of day. Teachers include Americans, British
nationals, Australians, New Zealanders and Filipinos who don't speak any Korean
at all.

Moon Young-ho, marketing manager of Times Call, said the market
for phone English has grown significantly in recent years, especially after
President Lee Myung-bak was sworn in in early 2008.

``Phone English is
traditionally well received during times of economic difficulty thanks to its
affordability,'' he explained.

The size of the phone-English market in
Korea is difficult to accurately measure, he says. Yet, recalling his four-year
experience in the field, he can say for certain that the market is expanding at
tremendous speed.

``If you type in ``phone English'' at naver.com, you
get at least 300 entries,'' Moon said, referring to his own market research.

It isn't just traditional English brand names that are expanding their
share. New investors have joined the competition, he said.

The selling
points of phone English are direct engagement between students and teachers,
along with affordability.

``Parents get quite enthusiastic about it.
It's cheaper than sending the kids to hagwon, private after-school institutes,
yet the quality is the same or better because the teacher is directly engaged
with the children," Moon said.

``Furthermore, since the session takes
place at home, parents can see their children perform. They may also be briefed
about their children's performance by the call center's headquarters,'' he said.

Times Call charges average 120,000 won per month for 10-minute daily
phone

2. Man-man Teaching or face-to-face teaching (the latter sound better since the former sound more a bit of gay relationship) The dorm-turned english academies offered by Koreans living here. - they have contacts in Korea & accepts students in their dorms & teach them english. Of course they hire Filipino English teachers.

3. There are companies & pivate individuals who offer home-based Teaching jobs - the convenience of not commuting to the office & just working in your house is also becoming a trend. One famous site for this is the ontue.com.

Writing in Techie World

Hmmm...At first glance...what would the picture mean to you?? What does it say?
Has it ever occured to you that what this picture depicts is inevitable in our modern techie world. Even for some writers.
I've been a contributor to my school publication/newspaper (although I'm not that really good). Ive experienced even for a short while how other writers feel. How their freedom of expression are suppressed. How they have smoothly adapted to the new world that computers are creating. We have gardually been relying with word doc, word pad, computer, keyboard. We have been missing the real menaing of writing. Yes! I am included there. I've been too lazy to inscribe words & express myself through the use of a pen. I'd rather prefer seeing the blinking cursor wink at me when everything is blank. I have forgotten that WRITING as in holding a pen & scratching it against a surface is still the best way of 'writing". Seeing your penmanship even if it's not legible sometimes expresses who you really are when you write. The feelings incorporated with it & the sentiments accompanying it. I remember writing this short letter-styled story in computer for our school's literary folio. While I was doing it I was like crying......the emotion flows within me like a river. And I've even included "that" there. But I've thought to put some font style on it. Like the faded & blurred letters from tears or something wet to give more emphasis to the emotion. Yeah. I've tried to look for that style in the computer but there was none.
Computers do make our life convenient & help us in many ways but it can never replace the hands that we use. The hands that do the "dirty" work.
Write (verb) - to form (as words) by inscribing the characters or symbols of on a surface
